CAS...Helping others...Helping yourself...

I know many of you are worrying about the CAS component of your IB diploma. I know it seems that more and more responsibilities are being heaped on your plate. Between homework, jobs and sports; when is there any more time to give? It is believed that performing community service and helping others helps build character and makes you a better person. Do you agree with this? Do you think giving time and helping those in need builds character? If you are helping people because you have to and not because you want to generates the same effects? What do you hope to get out of the CAS portion of your IB experience?

  1. I think that doing community service, whether it's voluntarily or forced, you will build character. Helping others, especially if they are in need/poverty it helps you understand what you have, and how to be thankful. I hope that my CAS experience is very fun, and challenging at the same time. The challenging part is already happening, so I hope for some future fun.

Helping others voluntary builds character. However letting it be forced upon people can tear it down. When someone really does not want to do something, their minds are set on only the negative aspects of said task. Of course, this isn't always the case but it is an option. As for IB, I signed up for this already knowing from my research what IB was about in terms of community service. I see it as a great opportunity for me to build relationships with a diverse group of people. I am an independent person and I never feel the want to form friendships with others. Through CAS, I am realizing that it is great that I don't have to depend on others - but sometimes others may need to depend on me.

I believe doing community service does build character. My family helps out a lot in the community and I know I always have the best feelin about myself after I have the opportunity to help others out. It I true ly an amazing feeling an a great experience I have. It can be an ey opener. Although some people do community service not for the benefit of helpin others but solely just obey hours for Cas or bright futures and that's not the point . The poit I to better your community not to get hours.

I believe that community service does help build character bu initially if it is being done willing not having to be forced to do so. However people can come around with doing it for the right reasons when realizing that it feels good to help people out. So I think that fitting cas in is good for all of us and wil benefit in the end.

  5. McKenzie Johnson,
I forgot we had to blog. I agree that there should be an I.B. component telling us to help others because no matter what we major in that one of the aspects we're going to be working with. We will always be helping people, because we are the future leaders of the country and we need to lead people in a way that helps them come to their full potential. I believe that doing community service because you have to is different then wanting to because you will put in different amounts of effort towards something you want to do. I hope to build and learn things I can use in my future from people that I have had an impact on.

I do believe helping others build character. With me, my mom always used to go to the nursing home and i'd go with her. I learned from those visits how to be kind and considerate of others. That's how ive always acted towards others. We should have something like that in the I.B world that just lets us help. Like McKenzie said we are going to be leaders and we need to know how to get people to reach their full potential.

I do agree with the fact that helping people and doing community service builds character, when you do it out of the goodness of your heart. I've done plenty of volunteer work and community service, without being forced to do it, and I had fun. CAS may seem like a pain because everything has to be charted and reflected, but once started it shouldn't be that difficult to keep up so I guess, I don't have a problem with it. And I hope to learn leadership and responsibility through CAS projects.

Soing community service whether it voluntery or required builds character. When you go out into the community you see that everyone isn't living a good life. It also helps you be thankful for the things you have and helps you be a giving person. I hope to lear from CAS how i can help service other people, how to be giving, and grateful for what I have even if it's not as much as the ne t person. I hope to learn not to be wasteful too.

Yes I believe that doing community service can make you a better person because even if you start to do the service solely on the fact that you have to, then you will start to do it when you don't have to, and learn to help those that are less fortunate than you. Or, at least enjoy your experience so if you have do community service again, then you will do it knowing that it will makes others happy, and it is not difficult to take a little time to help. So, if you volunteer because you have to, but it changes your feelings about doing something to help others, then i believe that it builds character. I hope that when I do all of the hours for CAS, then it will make me volunteer a lot in the future without doing it for any other purpose than to help.

I'ma bit late... but Just thought I should blog. CAS is a great component of IB. I think It may be the easiest part of IB actually because it's basically just out there for me and I don't have to worry about it much. CAS or community service will only build your character or make you any sort of better person if you take it on seriously and don't look at it as something you have to do like a chore. Depending on what you pick to do you can have fun with CAS. I mean Oxfam is fun to me. I get to make an interesting dish from an interesting country. Also Key club I can do whatever activity I want. I picked to help with a Christmas thing lately and those kids were so happy that it made me happy just to see a smile on their faces. One little girl was battling cancer and she was smiling. Its the little things in community service that you will see that can change or perspective on things.

I think CAS is a great component of IB. However, when its forced onto us along with all the work. It seems less important so we focus on the academic part more. But, community service is a great thing

CAS is beneficial to your overall well-being because your bettering yourself by helping the community. Your also creating a better understanding of others and how they need help. I hope to gain a better outlook of life in general, and how I can be there to do what I can to help the communities and environment. I like helping people :)

  13. cas shows how we are totally different than the normals students it shows how much we actually care about lives of others and gives us an understanding of how to help others with nothing in return except the thought of doing nice things for others with no reward - brandon bernard
