We dance round in a ring and suppose, While the secret sits in the middle and knows”-Robert Frost

All throughout Marquez's Chronicle of a Death Foretold, secrets abound. The catalytic moment of the novel, the death of Santiago Nasar, is caused by Angela Vicario allegedly revealing the secret identity of the man who took her virginity. However, this information was never, ever confirmed. Everyone in the novel possesses secrets; some minor and silly others extremely important that have far reaching effects on the people and actions of the novel. Can secrets still do damage if no one knows them? Do secrets always come out eventually? Talk about how secrets affect the people and the action in the novel, but also discuss whether secrets even exist in our modern world.

  1. I think all secrets come out eventually. Secrets are hard to keep and everyone knows someone and it comes out! Secrets can do extreme damage to people it can tear people apart and ruin relationships etc. secrets exist in our society for sure. For example the govenment is really sketchy and hides a lot from the general public. The government has many secrets they keep. However I think eventually they come out one by one and the public is aware of the secrets the govenment is holding.

    Secrets are never kept for long periods of time and are always twisted through the mouths of the people that heard them well on down the line. In the novel many secrets are being kept as to whom killed Santiago Nassar and as to what their motives are. The novel revolves around the killing of Santiago and the secrets that had been kept to prevent him from knowing about his presumed death. I know that nothing stays a secret for long and if they are kept than they are not kept in good terms but rather as ammunition to use later to hold against someone.

    Secrets can never be kept... Someone always cracks or leaves evidence behind. Secrets can damage even if someone doesn't know them. Look at Santiago Nasar he never figured out the secret and he dies.. Angela may have even been lying and her brothers killed the wrong man. Either way her secret hurt Santiago. Secrets are used against people and it creates havoc... In the modern world there are plenty of secrets like the first comment the government keeps secrets they treat us like mushrooms: feed us crap and keep us in the dark.

    Secrets do not ever stay the same over time. Whenever someone is told something the story changes as time goes on. Secrets run throughout the novel such as when santiago was going to be killed and everyone withheld this information from him.Angela lying about being "pure" was a secret but it eventually got out,hence all things don't stay a secret. And as mackenzie said if a secret is kept normally it is black mail or something of the sort to be used later on.

    Everyone has secrets that they tell absolutely no one. That is the way we are. Not all secrets are harmful, most of the times the deepest secrets are just things are too embarrassing or makes us too vulnerable so we keep it to ourselves. There are a lot of secrets that have never been revealed about people because they have never told. Not every secret needs to or will be brought to the surface.

  7. Hey, we all got secrets most of them are the ones we can't tell ANYONE.We're the type of society where we keep them no matter how detrimental to our psyche.Santiago was killed by a secret whether true or not that secret affected everyone.Most secrets do come out sometimes it slips or the person becomes to stressed and tells all.

    Secrets are weapons no matter when it happened that can hurt or make a persons life, although secrets have only been shown to hurt more then help. All secrets have a way of showing themselves if needs be although must know to hide it to better themselves;

    Well obviously secrets can do damage if no one else knows it. Look at the story- the only character that is knowing of who really had previously nailed and bailed Angela IS herself; we never actually find out if it was the late Santiago Nasar, as unlikely as it seems. We all have secrets, who we tell decides the outcome.

    Secrets can do damage to the the person concealing them, and depending on the situation, they can also do damage to the people that are involved in it. In an episode of Family Guy, Lois had a secret revealed after many years, and that secret was that she'd been a porn star when she was younger. When it came out, she was looked down on in the town of Quahog, and kicjked out of church, which she was an active member in. Secrets can mess up a person's life and they always come out, no matter how long it takes. In the novel, secrets caused trouble. Angela Vicario could be holding a secret of who really took her virginity, and she could've gotten Santiago Nasar killed for nothing.

  11. Secrets just cause harm to situations. Even if they are unknown, that doesn't stop them from being there, they're still going to end up affecting the situation or whatever. Secrets alwaysssss come out. If Angela Vicario was lying about the name she had given, she cost Santiago Nasar his life, and the time wasted in jail by her brothers. Secrets do exist in our modern world.

    Secrets can destroy someone's trust and reputation and always eventually come out in the light. Secrets are hard to keep and if you live in a small town like Angela Vacario, all secrets are bound to be found out and told anyway. The deepest, darkest secrets are brought to the light

    Secrets always come out to the light and they can either hurt or help someone. Trying to keep something hidden will result in a circle of lies to cover up hte secret.

  15. Some secrets can be kept forever-depending on the situation and the people involved. Not all secrets are bad secrets. Some secrets are kept hidden to protect or harm someone. In the novel, the government kept many secrets, and the people deserved to know what was really going on.

    I'm pretty sure that secrets get out whether its a secret that they tell on their death bed, or one that comes out immediately. But as Onecia said it can ruin trust. We see this in everyday life with secrets, like when someones is pregnant. It can ruin friendships and trust with everyone. It just depends on the situation or the people you think you can "trust" with.

    Even if no one knows your secret, it can still hurt you or others. If someone thinks you know something, they can try to make you tell them (like a mob beating someone for information). Or it can just be really painful for you to keep a big or small secret just to yourself. All secrets do come out eventually, because wither you told one person, or one-hundred, then there is always a way for it to get around by someones casual gossip, or a way to get revenge on you. So, because of that I would not say that not many secrets exist in the modern world, because of how large cell phones are now and no one can do anything without a phone or camera next to them to record them. The people in the novel were affected by secrets: Angela was dis-honored when her secret got out, and Santiago was killed, but the twins made their secret (killing Santiago) public, but most people acted differently to their secret, and ignored it. (possibly because they thought it was weird that it was made public before it happened, so they were confused as to what they should do.
