The Best of all possible worlds...

Pangloss has the ability to justify anything. We have noses to wear spectacles. Pants exist so we must have legs. If we didn't  have syphilis in Europe, we wouldn't have chocolate either. To him, the world is a simple relation of cause and effect and it all happens because that is how God created the world. Is everything really that simple? Is our world and the universe based on the simple laws of cause and effect? What about free will? How much control do humans really have over our lives? Or, is everything already planned out for us and we are just acting as it was ordained? Please discuss.

Somethings may be simple. However people should seriously stop and think deeply about the consequences of their actions. As for free will I don't think this world and its leaders don't give us free will. We have the right way and the wrong and if you choose wrongly then you will have to face the consequences, and because we are given the choice by others they have taken away our free will.

The world is not as simple as the cause and effect theory. There are of course things that we cannot change. But there are more things that we can change. Many of the most deadly diseases are preventable such as HIV, diabetes, and some cancers. And although there are situations where things are out of our control - I believe that we still have free will. We have the ability to make decisions in our situations.

I mean you could see the world as simple cause and effect, and that this is why everything happens. But you could also view it as you have control over everything that happens to you. Also, i don't believe that we have free will. From birth we are told what to do, how to act, what to wear, etc, and if we go against that then that means we're a bad child that is being disrespectful. In this way of looking at things, we never have the choice to do or be our own person.

People can see the world as cause or effect, good or bad, etc. But our world is way more complex than what some people may think. We have laws of science and laws for this and so much information about our planet and the reasons things happen its crazy. We have to grow up and learn why everything happens and how we dont know every little detail. Nobody will ever know exactly why everything has its particular duty. However pangloss and his optimistic view is a lifestyle and there are multiple people in our world like him. Like veronica said we can be our own person and believe that everything has a cause and effect but its when you look into it more deepeer it gets more complex

Some concepts of the world can be very simple cause and effect and that's how it happens. Then you have the other concepts where this happens because of that and the reason that happens is because it just does and no one knows how or why. When we are brought up there is a way and character we are brought up to be like and act like. The panglosian-optimistic view says we are brought up this way because God wanted it to happen or we don't act the way we were supposed to because God wants it to happen.

  6. The world is simple. I think God created the world and based it on the simple laws of cause and effect. We have our free will, but whatever we do has an effect, whether it's positive or negative, it's there. We have control of our own lives but we do have limitations, sometimes it seems like a lot is already planned out for us, but we still decide what we want to do, and whatever that decision may be, it will have a consequence.

Cause and effect does happen how ever the it is not as simple as Pangloss puts it. For example, legs do not exist because pants do however pant exist to cover the legs. But war and death happen because of someone's wrong decision. History and everything that happens in the world are based on the laws of cause and effect. I believe to an extent everything is planned. God knows whats at the end of each road but he gives us the choice of which way we want to turn. That is why we have instincts and a conscious to help us make the right turn in life. So ultimately the person makes the decisions of their life.

Everything may be as simple as cause and effect, but we will never really know, because it depends on our perception of life, and its outcomes. Depending on if we look at the world in an optimistic or pessimistic way, we feel different ways about the things we do and the things that happen to us. With optimistic views, we take responsibility of our actions, and the things that happen to us in life, and we learn from them, whether good or bad. But in a modern pessimistic or Panglossian philosophy, we can justify our actions and reactions by blaming them on the laws of cause and effect. There is no proof as to which is right because in religion, God knows everything and he knows our plans and everything that we are about to do before we do it. This gives us the question of if we really have free-will, where there is no real answer.

Pangloss feels everything is a cause and effect. This is true to a certain extent because it all depends on everyone's perception of life. If you look at things in an optomistic way or a pessimistic way. When it comes to optomism you view things and look at things in a positive way always. If you have a pessimistic view then you see things in a negative way... But many people in modern pessimistic and Panglosian philosophy we justify our actions and reactions by blmaing it on cause and effect. Everything is not planned, we make our own decisions.

Nothing is as simple as Pangloss's terms there isn't a specific reason that causes or effects are put a certain way. Not everything needs a cause and not everything need have an effect on something. In his own world everything happens for a reason and is cause and effect which is quite simple and not very thought provoking. As humans we only have so much control over our lives and what affects us everyday. While we can chose what we want for lunch we still are restricted from certain foods because of our amount of choices. Free will is never quite free but more endowed and with drawn from what we could have if we truly had free will all the time.

  11. Pangloss's simplified version of cause and effect is too vague for the entire world. I do think God does play a large hand in the world and what is already planned to happen, but people do have a lot of control and power to do things. Free will is a very important thing, especially in America today. People do what they want for reasons that they are aware of. Parents do block free will a lot though. We can only have so much freedom. Pangloss is not completely off because he at least establishes an idea for others to branch off of and create their own opinions about it.

  12. people sin. There is no such thing as pangloss's theory. Original sin does in fact exist and people need to quit using God as an excuse to do bad.things. I'm on my phome so thrres probably going to be a lot.of.typos but anyways, people try.to say.that bad things happen because thats.what God wanted to happen. Noooo. You went against what you were supposed to do and you have to face the consequences. Andie Sifontes

I think the world is way more complex than what Pangloss makes it out to be. Although we have a free will, humans only have so much control over events that happen in our lives. But, the things we do have control over is when our choices and free will come into play. For instance, Pangloss justified getting syphilis by saying God meant for it to happen. But, he made a choice to sleep with someone with the disease and that poor choice is in fact the cause of him catching it too. Pangloss's theory is foolish.

The world is not based on cause and effect. There are many other factors that contribute to why things happen. Not every single thing is planned out. Whatever decesions we make eventually have an impact on our lives but the outcome depends on the decsions that we make. Free will does in fact exist, but to an extent. We can make our own decisions, we can decide what is right and what is wrong, but sometimes free will can be limited. We can choose to join the army, but when in the army, we have to follow all orders and we don't get a say in anything.

  15. The World is a system of so many different beliefs made up just to justify our actions as human beings who are truly incompetent to see that most of the reasons that we act the way we do is not due to our so called free will but by what we have justified through the beliefs that we have created. Pangloss is just an example of another church going belief creating or following person who feel that they are good enough to do what they please and have a excuse or reason to why they did what they did.

You can say that everything can be explained or not, or what the reason is, but there is know way to prove it or for everyone to believe the same thing. I know that Pangloss' beliefs are unrealistic, and he would have probably thought mine were too. I do/don't believe that everything can be explained by cause and effect. The scientific evidence shows cause and effect to be true (how humans evolved in evolution), but many people believe solely in faith (God made the earth and people). It all depends on your perspective. However, I do believe we have our own free will and you can make your life go in any direction you want to.
