As we discuss Huxley's Brave New World, we focus on all of the negative aspects of the society: the control, promiscuity. lack of individuality and drug induced manipulation. However, for all of the obvious negative aspects, the new society has eliminated crime, poverty, disease, greed and many other deplorable human conditions. Are there any positive aspects of the new society? Is there anything to be learned from Huxley's vision? Is the price of this kind of society too high for humans to pay? Please comment.
i personally do not see any positive aspects of it. the fact that one person comtrols everyone and he does this by giving drugs allowing them to pleasure anyone and everyone whenever they want and the fact that pretty much your destiny is based on at birth as in you cant do anything to change it thats retarded.we can learn that to stay away from such an event we should eentertain oursekves with different things and not let any material controlus. yes because giving your life to be controlled by one man is just like giving your soul to the devil. once he controls you its hard to get out of his grip whereas if you are bernard and you dont fall for the man or culer so he doesnt want to be like everyone else. thats how i feel at this school also just saying.

ReplyDeleteThe new society suggested in brave new world is one that is ridden of the problems as you stated for examples that today are the main problems that are which our laws and rules are based to eliminate. The New World in many ways is the perfect society that we as individuals are hoping for when making new medicines to eliminate disease and new laws to eliminate crime. I think we have a lot of information to gain from Huxley's "new society"; including the way to enhance embryos to not have disease and to eliminate the want for higher needs by the poor therefore to eliminate crime. I believe in some aspects the price is too high for some to pay but in terms of the embryos being disease free and cleansing; we have room for that. That I do agree is one of Huxley's visions that can be reached through the process of time.

ReplyDeleteTo my belief there are some posotive aspects and negative. Like there is no crime, poverty, and the economy is great. I wish that the u.s could eliminate all of those bad qualities. But on the negative aspect, i agree with brandon on how one person rules everyone. I mean, if one person rules the society, how are things going to improve or get any different? Are things always going to be the same, or is something going to change in this process. Agreeing with McKenzie on that the visions can be reached through process of time.

ReplyDeleteI personally believe that there are many positive aspects to the new society. With the way things run, there is no crime, poverty, and disease, despite the fact that there's also no individualism. But looking at the positives does seem to eliminate the social struggles that bind our society. But Brandon's view does point out that the price is too high fo humans to have to pay. Being controlled by one man is just like selling our souls to the devil, so I guess this society isn't worth it.

ReplyDeleteI believe that this book is fiction. Sure this guy was able to get a few things correct but I don't believe the 'society' in that book is a 'society' at all. I don't think something like that could happen. It would take like a wipe out or mass destruction to get us to be like that. I don't believe most of the population could just fall under something like that much less give up having children or books or many other things they don't have in the Brave New World. However from the book we learn what people think they can do. We learn there are people who feel they are superior and must rule. We can learn how to deal with the selfish desires of a person.

ReplyDeleteIn brave new world there are many negatives as you already stated such as the control by one person and everyone belonging to everyone. However positives to the society Huxley portrayed could be looked at as good because he relieved all the worries of the world such as broken hearts(no such thing as love) , no need to worry about not being able to pay bills, no starvation. Some of these things are things that we are trying to eliminate in today's society such as starvation and debt.

ReplyDeleteThere are many positives in the brave new worlds such as a good economy, no crime, and prevention of diseases. But the negatives outway the positives. The is no individuality and people can't speak out for themselves and Their lives are controlled and planned by the "Controller." They are raised without families and the babies learn through electricity that books and flowers are bad. I don't see how anyone could live like that.

ReplyDeleteThere are few positive aspects of the Brave New World. Hunger, homelessness, war, and diseases have been eliminated , allowing for peace. Money obviously is no object to anyone and everyone has access to the samething, like the Feelies and Obstacle Golf for example. But, seeing as this is a fiction novel, everyting seems "perfect" and the idea of human nature seems as if it doesn't exist. The price of this "perfected society" is way too high for humans to pay.

ReplyDeleteI think the positive outcome of the Brave New World is the elimination of all the mentioned things like crime, poverty, and disease. All of these things are so trivial in life today, that without them seems kind of nice. I think the price of this society is too high to pay because people love to be in control of their own lives. People love power. You can't make everyone go in one line because theres always those people who want to lead their own line.

ReplyDeleteIn "A Brave New World", People are always happy, nobody has issues with anyone, there is no such thing as poverty and disease or even crime. From my viewpoint, the sacrifice we take to have a perfect society is not worth it. they have given up all the things we hold to ourselves to MAKE us ourselves... Though from their viewpoint, it is a perfect world. They don't know any better to realize that they don't have anything...

ReplyDeleteIt is really hard to say wither it is better to not have choices but less crime or vis versa, but I do believe that the price is too high for people today to go by because many people thrive on their individuality and taking that away would be too much to bare because they wouldn't be themselves. (even though they wouldn't know the difference)However it would be ideal to have no diseases, no crime, and everyone would be happy in their own mind.
I don't feel it is right for us to be controlled by one person because I am not good with being controlled much less being like everyone else in the room because it would make me feel as if I am not unique no matter how many little things they tweak, I like to be an Oreo in a room full of Ritz Crackers. Although it would be nice to have less crime, sickness, and other unhappy circumstances, Humans could not find one way to do this without war or something more drastic

This way of living is not worth it. A society where people don't really think for themselves is worse than a crime ridden society. The people of Brave New World were like programmed robots. Their lives were already planned before they were even born. Everyone should be entitled to decide what career paths they want to take, and how they want to live their lives.

ReplyDeleteThere are of course positive aspects like what you listed that there is no crime or poverty on the surface. But by looking closely, it is evident that there is crime, by the way the World Controls literally take advantage of everyone's lives. There is also poverty, because some people (like the epsilons) are experiencing less than others i(like the alphas and betas) in life. Huxley's predictions are believable because of the way the society is run now. For example, I know a lot of people who have to turn the channel (myself included) when a commercial comes on showing starving and bloated African children - who desperately need donations. Instead of continuing watching the commercial to call the number, America turns the channel because we can't stand watching people suffer. Once the channel is turned to a favorite tv show, all the pain is forgotten. Huxley is trying to tell us that technology is used to help us forget or escape the bad that is going on in the world.
