"I hope she'll be a fool-that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool."
                                                                                                  -Daisy, Chapter 1

Daisy utters these words as she finds out she has just given birth to a daughter. Based on Daisy's life as it is portrayed in the novel, why would Daisy choose to adopt this philosophy? Do you agree with her idea? Do all the women in the novel play the same "beautiful fool" role as Daisy? What effects do her beliefs have on her life? (Think in terms of her relationships with Tom and Gatsby) Do you think any women of today share this philosophy? Explain.

I think that daisy lives up to that quote because she acts like she doesn't know about tom and myrtle and over all she is just a ditsy person. Saying that she wants her daughter to be a fool is basically characterizing her own life. I guess everyone plays a 'beautiful fool' role because everyone is trying to hide something in their life and they think that nobody knows but in actuality everyone does know they just don't speak of it. Myrtle doesn't think that Wilson knows about her affair with tom. Etc. Some girls of our era do act like fools they fall in love to easily or they don't believe their friends when they think someone that loves them is cheating on them. Love is a fools game. And I think daisy is partially right when she says what she does. It most certainly applies to her life and others in the book.

I believe that Daisy chose to adopt that philosophy because the fact that her marriage is more arranged then her own choice, I say this because in the story Daisy acts as if she knows nothing but she does indeed know almost as much as Nick in this story. She know's that Jordan cheats at golf, she knows her husband has a mistress, and she knows that Gatsby would do anything for her. She characterizes herself as a "beautiful little fool" because she feels to take it upon herself to ignore that facts that surround her showing her what is going on, I believe she plays dumber then she is to gain the attention without drawing judgement. I agree with her concept in some ways but to play a "fool" is to hide your knowledge and talent to fit in with a crowd of people that aren't always going to be there to watch. All the women in the story play a "fool" Myrtle knows she can't replace Daisy in her heart but she trys to anyway believing that their is hope that Tom will marry her. Jordan acts as if no one know's she cheats at golf when everyone knows, and as said before Daisy has suspicions of her husbands fidelity but ignores them. Daisy affects herself in the "fool" stage because she obeys Tom and her foolish part of herself that she's grown accustom to and ignores her instincts and past with Gatsby not against her will but against her nature to be the "fool" Tom married. Yes, most definitely today in society there are "fools" whether it be someone who witnessed a crime but acted as if nothing happened, someone who plays dumb when someone is talking about about another person, and as Brianna said someone who falls in love to please the other person in a the relationship.

Daisy would adopt this philosophy because she feels like she is the fool for marrying tom when she didn't really want to, but as a wealthy girl she had to marry someone with a name. So she believes that her daughter will follow in her footsteps because she was born wealthy like daisy was. Also she had to pretend that she didn't know about tom and myrtle because proper ladies didn't address those problems. All the women basically play the "fool role" because they are all lying about something and are in denile about who knows their secrets. The effects of her beliefs have lead her to ignore myrtle and become miserable with her life, but listens to tom because the "fools" should do what their told. Yes, people today can be classified as fools, and like McKenzie said, people act dumb when they talking to certain people, or marrying someone for the wrong reasons.

I believe that Daisy does adopt this philosophy because throughout the novel she acts like she has no idea what is going on between Tom and Myrtle and she speaks in a high voice to get more attention. I completely agree with Brianna because for Daisy to say something like that demonstrates how Daisy thinks and what she knows. Also, I do believe people in today's society are "beautiful little fools" because instead of believing their friends like Brianna said, they're just in denial or stay with someone because it makes them look good. Just like Daisy being with Tom because of his status.

  5. Daisy says this because she hopes that her child will not have to realize the events taking place in front of her. Daisy knows that Tom is having an affair with Myrtle but she passes on a facade that she doesnt know anything; that she is just a blind object to Tom, the trophy wife. though not mentioned in the book, its implied that she does not expose the truth of Toms affair because it could ccost her her wealth as well as her status as Tom's wife. Daisy wishes that her daughter could be spared the trouble of knowing that her husband is having an affair.

Daisy chooses to use this philosophy in life because according to her, it makes life easier. Instead of living for herself and having to worry about the consequences of all her actions, Daisy feels it's better to be a fool to life, following the life that she's supposed to live, based on her social status, rather than the life that she really wants to live. I somewhat agree with her idea because she can indeed do what she wants and not be punished because she plays the role of a beautiful fool. But at the same time, a fool, whether beautiful or not, never gains independence. All of the women play this role in the book, like Mackenzie stated. Daisy's facade of a beautiful fool effects her life in negative and positive ways. She is able to do things that benefit her and hurt other people, yet she gets away with it. But she still has to hide important things that she knows, such as Tom cheatng on her. People live like that today. A lot of people play the "fool" role so they don't hve to come to terms with conflicts in life.

Daisy chooses to adopt this philosophy because she feels she is forced to. She is in an arranged marriage, her husband is cheating on her and she knows it, divorce is out of the question. I don't however believe all the women in the novel play that "beautiful fool" roll. For example Jordan was a very strong willed girl. She didn't let anyone take advantage of her and she knew what she wanted. Myrtle however I believe falls in this roll she was just a fool in general. Because Daisy believes in her own philosophy it effects the way she lives. She keeps quite about everything she knows and she seeks attention to make up for the 'fool' feeling she has to play. I think women of today still share the philosophy. It's easier to play stupid than face the truth.

Daisy chooses to adopt this philosophy because of the situation that she is in. Daisy was almost forced to mary Tom because she was wealthy and he had the name. She acts like she has know clue what is going on between Tom and Myrtle when she does. She wants her daughter to follow in her footsteps because she believes that being a "fool" is the best thing a women can be. Because of her beliefs, Daisy acts as though she has no idea of any messes that her and Tom have created and just feels that she can walk away from any situation. Many women today still follow the same philosophy. They figure that it is much easier to play stupid and run away from conflict instead of handling the situation.

Daisy said this when she found out that she was having a girl beacause as she was growing up that is how she acted. She fell in love with Gatsby and was forced not to be with him then pushed into marriage with Tom and she had to grow to love him,her life was just unfair. She is the perfect trophy wife and has to act as if Tom's affair with Myrtle is not going on because it was not her place to say anything about it. She feels that girls are raised to be beautiful and available when needed by he husband. For daisy's situation I would say she does live by this quote because it explains how she is throughout the book. All the women in the novel do not play the same role as Daisy, for example Myrtle wants to be a part of the upper class,Jordan wants to find love and her happy ending....I do not believe that women of today live by this philosophy because if you know your man is cheating you say so and it is not acceptable or looked over.

I agree with Brianna in the sense that Daisy does adopt to this philosophy because she is well, ditsy. She pretends to act like she doesn't even know what is going on between Tom and Myrtle. She is saying that a girl can never be anything more than a fool because I personally think that she feels that once a man is in a relationship with a girl that he has all the power and the girls can do nothing but be fools for falling for a guy like that. Girls now-a-days DEFINETLY act like that in the sense that they are more or less confused on what they want. They either fall in love too easily or don't believe, or atleast don't want to believe when the closest ones to them say something bad and just act stubborn.

Daisy chooses to adopt the philosophy because the way she has been living and the life she's portraying.Daisy was a "beautiful little fool" because she was still with Tom even though he was a aggressive, cheating man-whore.I don't agree with the philosophy because Daisy should wish better for her daughter but has gave up hope for her daughter just like she did for her situation. Also not everyone played the "beautiful fool" in Gatsby some played the "ugly fool" and just a fool. Her belief did affect her life because now she just thinks that all she is supposed now is a "trophy wife" and act like everything is ok but its not she has a horrible husband and a long-waited lover but she has changed herself to fit into that "American Dream" status to be up to par.Now some women conform to the "beautiful fool" role because they love the man too much or they don't want to hurt the family but some women decide to become more independent and become smart and successful.

I agree with Kristen. Daisy pretended to be a fool because she didn't really have a choice. She knows her husband is cheating on her but at the time, women didn't divorce her husbands. Especially not women from old money families with children and reputations to keep. Myrtle plays the beautiful fool role too. She keeps hopes that Tom will marry her, even though he makes her sit in another part of the train when they are going to New York together, beats her, and keeps his whiskey locked up in the apartment that they stay in. Jordan is more down to Earth than the others. She didn't try to cling to Nick at the end after all that had happened, and after the fact that she cheated at golf shows that she saw what she wanted and decided to get it on her own, even though she was doing it in an unfair way. There are women of today who play fools but less of them since there are a lot more options now. Some women might do what Daisy did because they really want their marraige to work. Some of them might leave their husband for someone better like Daisy couldn't.

I believe that Daisy is a lot more cognizant than she lets on. Sometimes it's easier to not know than it is to know. When she made that statement she was basically saying that she wishes her daughter could be detached from the real world. Daisy's philosophy is applicable to the world we live in today. Many women walk around like they live in total oblivion of what is actually going on around them just so that they won't have to deal with it.

I agree with Kayla and Brianna. She totally accepts this philosophy. She is always asking for "attention" talking in a low voice so people have to get close to her when shes talking. Also having the "responsibility" of a daughter, who she only dresses up to show off and then leaves her with the nanny. Even when she says "I hope she'll be a beautiful little fool" is actually talking about her own self, because that was what she had to be brought up as. She acts like a child at times and always is wanting attention and never really learned how to grow up. With Tom, she never really loved him. Their parents fixed them up because of the names they each had. And also because she was going to sneak out and go see Gatsby. And in this time period, women couldn't get a divorce because it wasn't socially accepted so Daisy had to always act like the perfect "trophy wife."

I agree with Aaliyah. When Daisy said that she hopes her daughter will be a 'beautiful fool', she's really reflecting herself. She doesn't want to accept the fact that she's not as happy with her life, as she thought she would be. Her husband cheats on her, and she truelly loves someone else- Gatsby. Daisy, and even a lot of women today, dumb themselves down, so they don't have to face the truth that just stares them in the face.

Daisy adopts this philosophy because she's been taught to be a fool her whole life. She says this to show how she acts, like a "beautiful fool". She acts oblivious to everything and tries to constantly seek attention from everyone. Daisy just wants her daughter to be a pretty face and take on her future role as the 'trophy' wife. It was socially accepted back the for woman to behave this way. Instead of facing her problems, like her love for Gatsby and Tom, she continues to play the fool .

  17. Daisy Adopts this philosophy because she feels as if the less she acts like she knows whats going on the less she will have to face reality. Every one of the women play this role acting as if they are foolish and don't know what they are talking about and in the 1920's it was the best thing for women to do. By here being playing as a fool only gave her what she wanted and that was a socially and financially secure life with a good name which was wanted by all women the women back then, for example her with Tom and Gatsby both had the money and Social Status but the name is what differed very strongly with Tom having a better Family name then Gatsby. Many women don't share this philosophy today and are very independent such as My English teacher Susan Ferguson who said freshmen year, " I don't need a man".

I believe that Daisy adopted this philosophy because she had too, her mother and all other women in her family probably believed in this too. Back in the 1920's, women had a role to play. They had to be the perfect wife with the great family and she didn't choose to marry Tom, she was basically forced to. She pretends not to know anything about Tom and Myrtle because it was bad to get a divorce back then. Other women, like Myrtle plays the role of the beautiful little fool. She thinks that Tom will divorce Daisy and marry her one day when she knows that he can't. Women today don't really have the same philosophy. Divorce and domestic abuse is more accepted.

Daisy probably chose to adopt the philosiphy of being a "beautiful fool" because of her upbringing. Her mom probably expected the same thing out of her just like diasy expects that out of her daughter. An example of her practicing this principle is when she pretends as though she doesnt know Tom is having an affair. She most likely thinks that if she is silent through everything and let others clean up her mess than life will be easier that way. Myrtle believes that the role of being silent and letting others take advantage of her, like tom is also the best way to go. she thinks that if she puts up with tom beating her around that he will fall in love with her. Women should not follow that role, because we are our own people. I believe that a relationship is about two people who have their own lives coming together in a mutual way, not one person being dominant over the other.

I agree with Tori, Daisy's mother probably treated her the exact same way that Daisy treats her daughter. Women had a role to play during that time period. Daisy was a trophy wife; she didn't do much more than put her daughter on display and play the role of a "beautiful fool". Her life would be a lot less complicated if she would just say what she is thinking or believes, instead of just staying quiet and acting oblivious to everything. Her husband is cheating on her and she is doing nothing, yet she has a complicated relationship with Gatsby and claims she loves him.
